Product Reviews

WOW, what a kettle!
I love everything about this kettle. The clear guide on the side showing the level of water (in liters). How quickly the water comes to a boil is astonishing, and when it does start to boil, the pot automatically cuts itself off. The pot also cuts off if all of the water boils out. The cord is short however to prevent tripping, but works just fine with an extension cord if necessary. This is a wonderful product!

Great Concept vs. Poor Product
YMMV but I have a few recommendations:

PROS
----

1. Filter for keeping the crud in the kettle at bay
2. Sleek and Intuitive to handle, I figured it out within minutes of opening it from the box
3. It boils water for my daily brew of tea

CONS
----

1. Filter is HARD to put back after cleaning... I still havent got it on
2. Its NOT CORDLESS so for the price its not worth it in my opinion
3. The ON/OFF switch DOES NOT work at all !!! May be a manufacturer defect... but I was kind of counting on it ..

OVERALL
-------

Might as well boil water on the stove, without the auto-shut off its pretty much useless.

Great Tea Kettle
I moved to the States from Canada and was horrified to see how few electric kettles there are available in stores. The one I had back home is quite old so I left it there thinking I'll just run out to the store & buy one. WRONG! Most stores only carry a couple & they're over $40! And Macy's had one that was just plain weird!

Anyhoo, I found this one and ordered it. Sunbeam is a good popular brand in Canada so I felt confident in purchasing it. It is GREAT! It doesn't have the heating coils in the bottom which is good. The coils can build up mineral deposits over time. It just has a flat metal heating element at the bottom. It is quiet and you can see the water inside boiling away. And the auto-shut off is wonderful. I'm quite pleased with my purchase. Now, if I could order some good Canadian tea from here...

Product Reviews

Sophisticated in design yet practical for everyday use, this 1500-watt electric kettle boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water quickly and quietly for coffee, tea, instant soups, and more. The unit features water-level marks in quarts and liters, a washable filter, and a removable anti-scale screen, which must be in place when heating. For convenience, the unit is designed with an "on/off" switch and a signal light, as well as automatic shutoff and boil-dry protection. Its concealed heating element and cool-touch exterior and handle provide added safety. The kettle is cordless for portability with cord storage in its base for tidy countertops. Turn the kettle off, unplug it, and allow it to cool completely before cleaning. The exterior of the kettle can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the kettle, base, cord, plugs, or other electric parts in water. The water kettle measures approximately 9 by 10 by 6 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

lifesaver!
If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.

I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)

The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).

Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.

It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.

Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.

Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

Just ok
Given the price this Kettle works ok, but:
- it fails to shut off quite frequently, when boiling point is reached (which is why I ditched my old el. kettle)
- it doesn't shut off, when you take it off the base (so you put it back empty and it's trying to boil the little water left inside)
- you have to fit it onto the base (better models can be put on 360 degrees).

If you wanna use this a lot, get a better one.

Update: Yesterday I started boiling a quart of water and went to do something else in the mean time. Of course I forgot about my water. When I returned to the kitchen, the kettle had shut off - but only after a full quart of water had evaporated :(

Doesn't shut off
I was recently traveling in New Zealand and every where you went (hotels, RV's, etc) had an electric water kettle. This was great and I really appreciated the automatic shut off, because my boyfriend keeps burning up our tea kettles. So I saw this one, read the reviews and decided to get it. I am so disspointed. The kettle heats water great, BUT the automatic shut off doesn't work at all. This is something that a few other reviews mentioned, so I am sending it back. I do not recommend getting this model.

Product Reviews

New tea snob in the making thanks to this excellent kettle
I am relatively new to the tea scene (my wife and I started drinking Teavana teas about a year ago) and as such I have been searching for a really good kettle. I wanted an electric kettle because of their ease of use as well as the extra features some of the nicer kettles offer. After an exhaustive search I decided upon the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle based in no small part to the excellent reviews it has received on Amazon and other sites.

I went to a few stores to examine it in person and compare it to about ten other electric kettles that the different stores carried but nothing seemed to come close to the design and quality of the Breville. So after finally making my decision, it was simply a matter of time before I made my purchase. I am very glad I waited as within 2 weeks this new Breville kettle was released. While still substantially costlier than the SK500XL, the BKE820XL has a number of features and design improvements that made the extra cost more than worth it. These include:

- Multiple temperature settings (different teas require different temperature water for an optimally brew) with 20 minute hold
- Improved water level indicators now on both sides (the single water level indicator on the SK500XL is behind the handle which makes it hard to read)

I've only had my BKE820XL a few days (I purchased it from a local store) so I cannot speak to its long term reliability yet, if it is anything like the SK500XL, I don't expect to have any problems.

Oh yeah, and the tea I've made in the last few days is easily the best I've ever brewed! Yay!

UPDATE 1/2/2009: I've had the BKE820XL for over a month now and I still love it! The only thing I've found that I would critique is:

- After you are done boiling water for the day, you need to either dry out the lid by hand or leave the lid open for a few hours to let the water evaporate (from the lid where it collects). I am concerned that not doing this might lead to issues down the road.

Even with that, I am still overjoyed with my purchase (which I use at least 5 times a week) and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a quality electric kettle.

UPDATE 3/12/2009 - Nothing much to report except that my wife and I are continuing to use our kettle mutliple times a week and are extremely happy with it. It has a permanent place on our counter! :)

Almost Perfect
I drink various types of teas constantly to my dentist's consternation, such as Irish and East Frisian in the morning with Pu Erh Tuo Cha and Green Jasmine in the evening. On the weekends I drink French Pressed coffee.

I did it the old fashioned way with a thermometer. Needless to say, but I will anyway, this kettle did make life simpler, but, (always a but) it has not functioned as advertised.

The primary issue is on the boiling setting for black teas. Sometimes it shuts off, and sometimes it doesn't. The other presets have worked flawlessly, and this may only be an anomaly with this particular pot.

I will say that I am going to order a second one, and send this one back to Breville for repairs. That should tell you how much I like the idea of this kettle.

Best tea and easy use
This is an incredibly elegant and precise, yet easy to use kettle. Even the sound to let you know when it's done is discreet and pleasant. Our household has a variety of schedules, and drinks a variety of teas as well as french press coffee. It's wonderful. Finally, jasmine green tea comes out at home as it should!

The manual holds only critical information, so it's brief - but read it well. I started to be dissatisfied about how the hold temp function works until re-reading the paragraph later.

I've only two minor criticisms. I wish that the minimum water that could be heated was 250 ml not 500 ml, but I get around it with an incredible insulated mug/carafe. More annoying is the cord length; if it was just a few inches longer to 2' it would be great. It's been difficult to find a place on the counter near an outlet that wouldn't steam the cupboards above or get knocked over. (And there's no room to stuff 3-6 feet of the correct type of 3-pronged appliance extension cord.)

So - very minor gripes. Even if it broke tomorrow, I'd order another immediately.

This is the kette I've been looking for
My mom is 83 and almost blind and I needed a safe pot for her. The other nonelectrical pots last 6 mths before the heat from the stove or the minerals in our water deteriorate them so they leak and rust--- even the stainless ones. This pot comes off the base that plugs in making it easy to fill. You fill it, flip the switch, wait a minute or two and when the light goes out, the water is ready. It is lighter and easier to handle than a regular pot. I wish it came in other colors, but the red is very pretty. My mom and I both highly recommend it.

happy customer
i received this in october as a gift, and i've thoroughly enjoyed using it. this is the second electric kettle i've owned and the first made by black and decker.

unlike previous reviewers, i've had no problem filling the kettle with water. the faucet clears the rim by more than an inch.

yes, the kettle is hot to the touch. but it's stainless steel and filled with boiling water, so i didn't expect it to behave otherwise.

the lid fits firmly. i see that as a smart safety measure rather than a defect.

i haven't experienced any issues with hot steam so far. the placement of the handle is comfortable.

i have left standing water in it for several days at a time. so far, there's been no leaking out the bottom or the sides, but i am staying on the alert for it.

finally, it's really pretty. but that's just a perk.

Beautiful, works well, but not so safe!
I bought one of these yesterday and although it works very well, it is designed poorly. The handle on top is bad for 4 reasons:

1. The lid is difficult to remove.
2. The pot is difficult to fill if you have a larger faucet.
3. If you remove the lid to add water too soon after a boil, the steam burns your hand the whole time you are refilling.
4. When you pour, steam comes out the spout to burn your hand.

If the handle were on the side where all other electric kettle makers put theirs, I'd be a happy customer. Now I have to go return this thing.

Amazon.com Review
Great for a dorm room or office, this cordless kettle lets you enjoy tea, coffee, or even dried soups at any time and without a range. And it's detachable from its power base for convenient pouring. The unobtrusive power base shuts off when the kettle is removed from the platform, and the concealed heating element never comes into contact with the water, keeping it from tasting flat or scalded. Made from high-quality stainless steel, the mirror-finished kettle is attractive and rust-resistant, and its 36-inch cord can be hidden in the base, making for easy, cord-free storage. --Madeleine Miller

Limited life expectancy
I moved to the U.S from the U.K 5 years ago and my first task was to find an electric kettle. I was amazed to see how rare they were and it took a while to track one down.(I was without a computer for a while, so maybe that was why}. I found a great looking one in this product, but was very dissappointed when it died early after 1 1/2 years. I got another one thinking it was just bad luck, but lo and behold. It has just died again of the same problem. The connection on the base gives up. First it will work if you spin it round on the base until the light goes on, but then it just has enough of that and becomes good for nothing. I won't be buying a 3rd. I am looking for a different brand now. For the price, I expected it to last longer than 2 years.

The perfect gift for myself!
As soon as my kettle arrived I had it out of the box and set up for use. The instructions say to boil water in it two to three times before use to be sure it is clean. I did this in the time it took me to compose this review! The kettle is attractive, takes up little counter space and has a cord which winds under the base to stay out of the way. It is very easy to use. I'll never have to worry about leaving the teapot on the stove too long any more. This kettle shuts off as soon as the water boils. I am very happy with this product!

almost perfect
This is an all stainless steel kettle,(I do not like my water being boiled in a plastic container) with the heating element installed UNDER the bottom of the kettle, so no water has direct contact, which avoids build up. Very nice. Heating is very fast, I like using it.The SS quality is very good (high mirror polish) and retains a gleaming shine, if you wipe it frequently. When new,the kettle smeels strongly like plastic inside, as there is a small plastic part indicating max. fill line, this will disappear after some usage. However, there are a few things: The handle is indeed awkward, to empty the kettle completely you need to turn it upside down almost completely, which some people might find difficult to do.The 'ON' lever is very easily hit accidentally on a busy work surface, and the kettle heats up dry, and repeats over and over until it would probably burn out.It happened to me, but cought it on time, since then I always unplug it, which is inconvenient. If you forget to put the lid on, it won't shut off automatically, and will boil dry...(I happen to go back to my desk when using it, since there is no acoustic signal of any kind indicating boiling, this happens frequently, especially when used by different people)Also, partial fill lines inside would be nice, as one always has to guess the qty. you fill in. I use bottled water for tea, so I don't want to pour away much every time. But I get better at guessing. This one is best for the individual user if you appreciate top build quality and classic design and don't mind a few technical imperfections.

Massively convenient, a real time (and maybe life-) saver.
My wife loves a good cup of tea and in the past, we just left the kettle on very low heat on the stove. The other night I came home to the smell of gas. The breeze had blown out the flame and my wife, who had a really bad cold, was upstairs and could not smell the gas.

Time to get something a bit safer while we still had a house! After some research, we ordered this electric kettle (to the joy of my wife's British friends who think we are barbarians for not having one.)

I was astounded at how fast this thing heats water, maybe 5 minutes for a mostly full pot from tap-cold to full rolling boil.

The automatic shut-off works perfectly (and has a small light so youneed not guess if it is off or on) and we no longer need to worry about errant gas fumes and whistling kettles.

The kettle is well-made, attractive and seems to be sturdy and definitely works a treat. Get one and you won't be dissappointed. Needs a three-prong outlet, so make sure you can use it first. Sides do get hot but the handle stays properly cool and the safety lid works very nicely with no drops or leaks that I have seen.

No chef would choose this
I'm from Australia (and have also lived in the UK) and consider an electric teakettle a basic staple in the kitchen.

Two major gripes:
1. If you look inside there are actually silicone(?) fasteners used that touch the water - consequently any water you boil in this one smells and tastes like metal and plastic/rubber, even after you've brewed it into tea. Completely unacceptable. Baking soda doesn't help much.
2. The stainless steel finish is HOT to the touch. Scalding/burning hot. I can't believe this thing is actually a consumer approved product. There is NO insulation whatsoever, yet this is a counter top product. You might as well just use a pot on the stove. Imagine if your stainless steel toaster burned hot on the outside.

Three minor gripes:
1. The lid is not solid and seems like it would break in a fairly short lifespan of use.
2. You pretty much have to fill it by lifting up the lid. You can't use the spout for this, like you can with a lot of models.
3. This thing is heavy. Heavier than a pot you might use to boil the same amount of water. This adds to the risk of burns.

On the plus side:
1. It looks fine.
2. This does boil your water quickly... so if you like the sound of bubbling water and that's all, then I guess you could buy this.

Unhappy buyer - this one's going back. I wouldn't want this if someone gave it to me, let alone pay for it.

Nice design & great function
In replacing our stovetop kettle with an electric one, I was looking for one to match the stainless steel & black appliances in our kitchen, and this one is great. This heats water much faster than the stovetop or microwave, and is pretty quiet in the process; the sides get a little hot during the heating, but the bottom stays cool enough to move straight to the table (sans trivet!) I don't know if the "scale screen" included will help any, but otherwise I think this a great purchase!

looks good AND works like a charm!
It's not often that one finds a product that's both visually attractive AND functionally satisfying. This kettle is one of those rare items: the shiny stainless steel body is beautiful to look at, and it boils water very very quickly! It features a nice big and sturdy handle which is very comfortable, and the spout is perfectly designed so that you'd have to be a real klutz to spill things. The cordless feature is wonderful, I tried a cheap ten dollar "Hot Pot" for a day or two and hated having to deal with the cord, plus that model doesn't have automatic shutoff despite what it says on the box---huge fire hazard! There is also a power-indicator light and water-level indicator gauge which are both handy, and I like that there is no exposed heating element inside which would be a pain to clean. Instead it's all smooth clean lines, inside and out!

Sure the outside of the kettle does get a little hot so you probably don't want to have this within reach of toddlers or anything, but if your toddlers can get up on your kitchen countertop then you have a LOT of other problems as well! I appreciated not having to deal with how plastic inevitably gets dirty-looking and sometimes leaves a funny taste in the water.

My only slight concern is that the lid needs a little bit of force to shut completely...probably some kind of insulating seal that shortens the time needed to bring water to a boil, but makes me wonder how durable that part of this kettle is going to be. Oh well, will find out in a few months or (hopefully) years, I suppose!

Fine Kettle superb price
I needed a second kettle and didn't want to shell out about $90+ for another Braun WK600 Stainless kettle (which I am happy with). So I bought this Aroma. Not as heavy, but more aesthetic, boils water fast and fully satisfactory. While I have had for less than a week, it's performed very well.

One reviewer said that the "on" switch at the bottom of the pot broke. I noticed that it takes a very light touch to engage, so maybe if a heavy touch is used, this switch could break. Time will tell whether it's a durable product but at this time I'm very happy with the kettle.

Works Great!
I bought this after I was so disappointed with a Breville one. The pot does get hot but I don't have any children or pets to worry about. The boil time is very fast and there is no coil on the inside so I do not have to worry about the build-up or rust I have experienced with other kettles. The water tastes good and clean. For this price it is very affordable! I do have to admit that the pot seems a little cheaply made, but I didn't expect much since it seems to be less than half the price of others of the same volume and style. I am very happy with this!!

Update (more than a month later): this is still working so quick and perfectly! I couldn't be happier!

Probably the coolest-looking kettle out there
I just got this kettle as a replacement for the old leaky one. It is now officially the coolest-looking kitchen appliance in our home. It is still too new to tell anything about its quality though. If it breaks within a year - I will come back and update this review.

Our old kettle had an exposed heating element, which, in my opinion boiled the water a bit faster than this one. But, it accumulated deposits that were hard to clean, which was a drawback. A large opening at the top of this kettle makes it really easy to reach inside and clean if need be. Its VERY easy to see how much water is in the kettle, as oppose to kettles with narrow plastic windows. It does not get as hot as steel or glass kettles, at least not to the point were it will burn you if you touch it. And of-course - our kids and everyone else like that blue LED light that shines through the water. Its like a lava lamp in fast motion, when the kettle is boiling. In short - so far we are very happy with this product.

Quickly Boiling, and Fun to Watch
We love this new water pot - if you have kids, they'll love to watch the water boil (as do we!) - a light shines makes the water appear blue while it's boiling and then turns off when the water is hot - no more kettles boiling dry or irritating you with whistles when you can't get to the stove immediately. Great item!

I love this thing...the watched pot boils
Who would think watching water boil could be fun? This pot not only boils water quickly and cleanly, it entertains while you're at it. The blue light shining through the bubbling water is really quite lovely.

Product Reviews

Perfect for tea lovers, this electric kettle features an innovative temperature-control system for easily heating water to a specific temperature. Black teas brew nicely with water brought to a full boil, but green and white teas steep best at a slightly lower temperature. Using the clearly marked variable-temperature control knob, the electric kettle can be set to boil like a normal kettle or to a pre-boil temperature for lower-temperature teas--no need to add cool water to boiling water and no more guessing at when the kettle's about to boil. The unit quickly heats up to 30 ounces of water, and can maintain a consistent temperature without reaching the boiling point. When set to boil, the kettle provides hot water not only for black tea, but can also be used for making hot cocoa, instant noodles, or oatmeal. Other thoughtful details include a concealed heating element, a cordless carafe, a handy water-level gauge on the side, a power indicator light, and a flip-top lid button for convenient filling. Made in China and housed in durable stainless steel, the sleek-looking electric teakettle measures approximately 8-1/5 by 6-4/5 by 9-1/5 inches.

Finally!
This kettle fills a long-time need in the electric kettle marketplace -- one with a variable temperature control! For those who are real tea appreciators, you will appreciate finally having an electric kettle that allows you different temperature settings for your different kinds of tea.

Other great features are that it heats the water quickly, in under 5 minutes. It has an automatic shut-off when it reaches the set temperature. It will not boil dry (I haven't tested this feature, but the literature claims it to be true). It looks sleek and modern sitting on your countertop with its stainless steel and black stylings as compared to the white plastic electric kettles of yore. It also has the convenient design feature of the cord coiling into the base, so you only have to pull out as much as you need to reach your outlet.

I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple of reasons. Most importantly, because it gets hot hot hot to the touch. Be careful, or you will burn yourself. Make sure to only touch the plastic parts, which isn't always so easy. Secondarily, because the temperature control knob and the on/off switch are made of flimsy plastic -- the rest of it is well made, but the second time I pushed the on/off switch it popped off! Luckily, it is easily re-attachable.

I am glad someone finally put one of these out on the market!

3 1/2 stars-- Does a great job, but missing bells and whistles.
The UtiliTEA is an excellent electric tea kettle-- it's comes in two parts, the base and the kettle. The base plugs in, the kettle rests on top of it. Fill it with (up to four cups) of water, fit the kettle on the base, set the dial to the desired temperature, flip the switch and moments later, you've got hot water when the switch pops back up. I've used mine endlessly since I've gotten it.

A few gripes though, the UtiliTEA's temperature gauge is color coded rather than providing any kind of numeric indication and the manual. It's easy to use, but if you needed precision (and I don't), you won't be able to get it. More irritating is no real audible indication that it's done-- the lever clicks, but there's no whistle, bell or anything else you'll notice in the other room. Good news is, it's really fast, even to bring water to a boil. A final thing I dislike-- there's no "off" switch on the base and they recommend pulling the power cord between uses. I'm not certain whether it's unsafe to leave it plugged in, but I keep pulling the plug after every use which is quite honestly annoying. Mind you, I'm a new homeowner, I'm a little paranoid about such things.

I realize my criticism is pretty harsh-- the UtiliTEA does its core competencies fantastically, and I've used this exclusively as my water heating solution, but while it's an excellent device, any potential buyer should be aware of its limitations.

Convenient, Simple Design
I am a tea drinker and I find this appliance to be very useful. I drink green, oolong and pu-erh tea pretty much every day. I keep this little guy on a book shelf in my room where it is at a perfect height for me lift it up and set it down.

The temperature control knob is designed as a general guideline, and I love that boiling water isn't its' sole function. I mean, I drink green and oolongs too, so to boil water and wait is misused energy. It shuts off after reaching the desired temperature. I tweak the knob personally, as it is just a guideline.

Yes, the knob and kettle switch are not made of steel. They are in fact plastic. So please, don't start wrestling with your tea kettle. I know it's fun to use and it looks like a spaceship, but no wrestling...

If you combine this with a Brita filter, you have two of the best investments for tea for the rest of you life. It is wise to use filtered water in this utilitea, otherwise you risk calcification and other mineral build up on the interior of the kettle. The buildup can diffuse into the water and changing the taste of whatever you brew.

Although the lid retains a plastic smell even after some months of use, it DOES NOT adulterate the water. If it did, I would have returned it instantly...

In conclusion, the ease of use, aesthetics, temperature control and reliability give this 5 stars. I'm someone who uses this everyday, I can say it significantly streamlined my life- tea is a large part of it!

I also recommend for the coffee drinkers using a French press.

Looks can be deceiving
I ordered this kettle specifically to avoid heating up water in plastic. However, this kettle emitted a foul chemical odor that also transferred to the water. I boiled it a few times plus tried the water/vinegar suggestion in the brochure but nothing seemed to help. I decided that I didn't want to take the risk of drinking these unknown chemicals so I'm returning it - it's not worth the risk. I can't figure out if it's coming from the "stainless steel" bulb (that feels like plastic to me if you tap on it) that covers the heating element or the plastic seal between the glass & the bulb. Plus the lid has a stong odor too & that is plastic covered in "stainless steel".

totally pleased
My biggest rave is the Amazon.com customer service. I fell in love with the look of this kettle and found the best price on Amazon.com (with free shipping!) When it arrived, it only worked if the kettle was oriented one way on the base -- when it boiled, the water dribbled on the cord. Called Capresso Cust Svc -- 1st person said, it's supposed to do that. After another week, it got worse. Capresso would replace it if I paid it's shipping back to them. Called Amazon.com, got another in the mail days later, post-paid shipping back the first one to them. Wow! This kettle works just fine. Very rapid boiling of water, no complaints about anything. To keep the glass and that silver dome shiny, you do need to do the vinegar thing every now and again. Couldn't be happier.

Rubber/silicone washer around the heating element boils with water and emits foul smell: Dangerous Product!!!
This is, indeed, an awesomely designed kettle, unrivaled by any. A glass kettle is just a brilliant design.

But it has a serious design flaw. The heating element is like half a metal ball that protrudes from the bottom of the kettle. In order to place the glass kettle around it and seal it, they use a silicone/rubber washer.

This is what causes the foul smell. I cannot believe how people can simply fail to understand that even if the smell goes away, the chemicals emitted in the water do not! And I cannot understand why people are giving manufacturers such an easy time and not look after their own health.

Saddest thing, this is the easiest flaw to fix. Instead of a glass bottom, they should have had a stainless steel bottom that could fuse seamlessly with the heating element. The bottom could form a short rim up the sides of the kettle, and the glass could be fitted into this metal base. This would still require some material to seal the glass into the metal, but at least it would not be so exposed to the boiling water.

Anyway, they need to rethink this. Back to the store it goes--though it matched oh so well with my awesome Bodum Kona all glass coffee drip maker. What a pity....

The Hamilton Beach 10 cup is my next choice (available through the manufacturer, though not Amazon.

Good appliance, finally made of stainless steel
While there is typically little difference between any two electric kettles, this one is at least at the top of the spectrum.

1. Being an extremely convenient home appliance "discovered" by the Europeans decades ago, and later in the USA, the electric kettle always left one concern: compared to its mundane predecessor it was typically made of plastic inside and out. Which could potentially mean various unhealthy substances emanating into the water from the plastic sides, especially at high boiling temperatures. This one is made of stainless steel and doesn't cause any such concerns.
2. The kettle can be rotated on its cordless base, which makes it easier to put it back on the base than some other models.
3. It has a transparent wall segment to measure water level. While this "window" is not located optimally (somewhat shadowed by the handle) and hasn't got a bright floating level marker, this design is sturdier than some others, and is less prone to leaks.
4. Blue back-light that goes on and lights this "window" when the kettle is switched on, is a nice touch. It both attracts attention and simplifies reading the water level.
5. It's easy to open the lid, and the opening is wide to add water with no problems or dripping. (In some models the handle partly covers the lid, making it hard to open and/or add water.)
6. Like in most up-to-date models, the heating spiral is NOT located inside the boiling case, but rather underneath it, which makes the design more relaible, and it is also much easier to wash the kettle inside if need be.
7. Time to boil is reasonable and not worse than average.

Best high-end electric kettle for price.
We've had ours for one month after the cheapo plastic one died. I investigated multiple other high-end electric kettles, including Cuisinart, Chef' Choice, Krups, Braun by reading reviews on-line and comparing them @ the local bricks & mortar stores. The Breville is clearly the best designed one for the money.

Pros:
- clean, beautiful design which is also easier to clean.
- hefty, substantial base unit with place to wrap around the cord
- boils quickly in 4 min. for full 1.5 L
- more substantial kettle than more expensive models by Chef's Choice or Cuisinart. The Chef's Tools electric kettle @ the same price point looked flimsier. In fact, the floor model Chef's Choice kettle was no longer closing or opening its lid properly-- always a bad sign when a floor model falls apart.
- modest yet easily audible "ping" sound when the water has come to a boil, and the kettle shuts off automatically.
- the outlet is easy to pull due to the hollow center design

Cons:
- heavy kettle.
- occasionally, there's a metallic taste in reboiled water if the water was left inside the kettle for several hours. However, the water tastes fine if you boil a pot from freshly filled water.

Overall, clearly the pros outweigh the cons. We're heavy users of the electric kettle, especially in the winter, boiling water for teas, soups at least 4-5x per day. We'll report back again in a yr after the warranty expires.

UPDATE > 1 yr after post (4/6/08): The Breville Ikon is still going strong. The water seems to be taking a slightly longer time to boil. We still use it 3-4 times per day, and it works well.

Excellent product; a "hit" at the office
Truly a top notch product. I was tired of lukewarm water "nuked" in the microwave for tea or hot chocolate at the office so, after consulting other customer reviews for products under the "electric kettle" search, I took the plunge. A bit expensive, but worth it.

Pros:
1. Stainless inside and out. No plastic taste or chemical worries.
2. Very comfortable handle, nice curve to it, and totally insulated.
3. Cord minder on the base bottom; allows you to tailor the cord length to your needs. Cord very sturdy.
4. Separate base contains the cord. The kettle itself reminds me, from the standpoint of heft and size, of an "old fashioned" stove top percolator
5. The removable kettle itself; also, you can turn the kettle around to any point on the base; it doesn't have a notch or fixed position
6. Construction appears to be quite solid. Push a button and the top opens up automatically (not just a cheap spring, either). Glass center insert on top so you can see in; top is also domed to direct condensation back into the pot; haven't had any problem with water dripping onto the counter (or hand!) when opened.
7. Quick; heating just one mugful of water to boiling is easily faster than the microwave (same time in microwave will leave you with hot, but not boiling water).
8. Easy to clean; the opening is wide enough to get your hand in, and the top opens up to 90 degrees. There is a rod that runs up the inside, part of the temperature sensing system, but there's room enough to get a soft cloth behind it, you'd just need to avoid too much force. Cleaning, however, is not a big deal overall if you use it for its purpose - heating WATER only (don't heat your soup in this; it's not made for it).
9. Looking at other reviews, it seems that some people like to fill the kettle via spout rather than main opening - spout is nicely sized to easily allow this, if you want.
10. The water gauge is big, well marked and very nicely lighted, thus easy to read.
11. Automatic turn-off at boiling temp, and also has a function to avoid boiling dry (The boil turn-off feature kicks in about 30 seconds after you can see the water boiling; I haven't personally tried to boil it dry, so can't comment on that feature). There's a nice, but soft, single "ding" that it makes when it turns off. You might not hear it from another room, but it shouldn't damage itself by boiling dry, so even if you miss the ding, it's not a big deal.
12. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to mine its lines are clean, simple and elegant. Should fit with just about any decor. Fingerprints on the outside stainless haven't been a big issue; wipes clean with damp cloth.

Comments (not "Cons"):
1. Regarding another reviewer's comments about weight, it does have some "heft," but on the other hand, it has a good capacity! To heat one or two cups, it's handy enough. Stainless steel will be heavier than plastic, so if weight is an issue for you, you may wish to consider this point.
2. I wish the otherwise nice switch wasn't directly at the bottom end of the handle, but this really isn't a big deal.
3. I've seen reviews indicating that stainless steel pots get hot on the outside. This one probably does, too (if you put your hand near it after boiling, you can sense the heat). Well, the handle is perfectly insulated, and this is NOT an insulated device. I wouldn't put my hand on the outside of any "regular" metal pot or pan (steel or aluminum, like those found in any kitchen for daily cooking)that had a boiling liquid in it, so I wouldn't do that with this type of device, either!
4. Reviewers of other kettles have suggested that the device may leak if water is left overnight. Have not had that problem with this, but then again, we empty it at the end of each day.
5. Have not had any problems with rust, as has been noted with competing products, but see comments in #4, above.

Before purchasing, I looked at the competition in stores, and a friend has "another leading brand" competetor; this seemed superior to the others in virtually every way (particularly build quality, the others I'd seen seemed rather "cheap" despite their price). Definitely recommend; this is a winner in our office; several people have already bought their own!

Great for the Cost
I bought this kettle for the sole purpose of making tea in my dorm room. For that it works great. Just put in some water and flip the switch (a handy light comes on to notify you that the kettle is in use). When the water's done boiling the kettle really does shut itself off. One other nice thing is that the cable that you use to plug this kettle into the outlet actually does detach (AC adapter style). This allows to you to use this as a pitcher, rather than keeping it plugged in all the time. The only real problem (hence the minus one star) is that you have to really make the sure the top is sealed because it doesn't seal tightly by itself. One thing to note, this uses a submerged coil to boil the water meaning that you must boil at least 1.5 cups of water in order for it to work.

Good Electric Kettle
This Electric Kettle is quite simple without any frills. For the price, it does what it claims to do. It boils water quickly , the water level is easy to see and has the auto-shut off feature. I have used it reliably to boil water for tea, oatmeal etc. The water is quite hot, so use caution when pouring it out. The lid , can sometimes be hard to close & open.

Faster & Hotter than Microwaving
I first became hooked on electric kettles when traveling in the U.K. and have kept putting off getting one. This is perfect for my six (O, heavens did I really say six!) cups of tea a day. Faster than the microwave (only because its actually boiled and hot) and no worrys about...did I leave the stove on as it has a brilliant auto shut-off. It even stays plenty warm enough to top off the first cup of tea. I love it, am only sorry it took this many years to indulge my self with such a simple product!

P.S -- Terrific on snowy days when the kids come in and want hot coco...FAST! (Makes one feel like SuperMom for the rare second or two!!! )
