Product Reviews

Quickly heat up to 1-3/4 quarts of water with this advanced electric kettle. The unit can be used to either boil water or heat it to the ideal and precise temperature desired with an accuracy of 2 degrees F--perfect for preparing temperature-sensitive teas like white, green, oolong, and herbal. In addition to tea, the kettle comes in handy when making instant coffee, hot chocolate, hot cereal, instant soup, and more. With 1500 watts of power, it heats water faster than a microwave or stovetop and uses 50-percent less energy than with an electric stovetop. Advanced electronics and a smart microcomputer detect the boiling point and shut the kettle off automatically once water reaches a boil, so there's no need to worry about water boiling away. Even more, its "keep warm" mode maintains the desired temperature until it's time to pour. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel power base for cordless serving and can be set back down on the power base in any direction. For added convenience, it provides a concealed heating element, an LED temperature indicator, a beeper alert, a cool-touch bottom, and a comfortable stay-cool handle, as well as triple-action boil-dry protection and automatic shut-off for safety. Attractively housed in durable stainless steel, the electric water kettle measures approximately 9-1/2 by 7-1/5 by 10-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Works great for many different kinds of tea.
So far, I am very pleased with my SmartKettle. It heats fast, it is pretty accurate, and it doesn't leave a funny taste in the water. With the fully adjustable temperature it works great for any kind of tea. It pours easily without spillage, and the top opens wide for easy cleaning.

There are a few things that keep me from giving it a perfect score though:

- There is no physical power off switch. There is a button to start/stop heating, but no physical switch to turn off the unit. You have to unplug it if you don't want to keep the BRIGHT display on 24/7. Not a big deal, but a power switch on the unit wouldn't have cost much and would have made it a bit more convenient.

- There is no way to adjust the volume of the alarm beeps. It can be a bit loud when brewing a cup at 5am.

- The minimum water level for safe brewing is supposed to be 16oz, I've found that you need to fill it closer to 32oz or the unit gives a low water level error and won't turn on. Again, not a big deal, just something to note.

Even with these minor quirks, it is still the best adjustable-temperature electric kettle that I have used.

I really wanted to like this but . . . .
I really wanted to like this kettle: visually appealing, heavy, sturdy, and a brand that I've been pleased with in the past. Unfortunately, the thing was a nightmare to use: constant error messages telling me that the pot was too full or not full enough, when it was just below the maximum fill line, and more error messages when I would try to adjust the temperature. I also thought the pot would maintain a constant temperature throughout the day, but it shuts off after 20 minutes or so. That's actually a safety feature, not a defect, but if you want something that will keep the water warm for several hours, you should look for another kettle. One final point: this is a heavy kettle, so you might want to think twice before you get it for someone who is frail or has arthritis.

Flawed
Chef'sChoice 688 SmartKettle Cordless 1-3/4-Quart Electric Kettle

This is a well made cutting edge electric kettle with one major flaw. It takes a minimum of a quart of water to work. That means if you want to brew a humble tea bag in a 12 ounce cup you must heat three times the water that you need. According to Chef's Choice, there is no way to adjust this feature. Too bad.

Avoid
These kettles are known to leak and the company will not stand behind their product. Suggest you buy a different brand.

Good... but a little pricey!

Made of heat-reinforced polypropylene plastic and a stainless-steel heating element, this one-piece oval-shaped electric kettle boils water for coffee, tea, instant soups, and more. The kettle's heating element is in direct contact with the water for a rapid and quiet heating process, making it ideal for the office, home, or college dorm. The 27-ounce kettle can boil about 5 cups of water in approximately four minutes. In order to operate, the unit must be filled to a minimum of 7 fluid ounces so that the heating element is covered. To turn the power on, simply plug the kettle in and flip up the switch below the handle. And there's no need to worry about leaving it on, as the kettle automatically shuts off when the water boils. For added safety, the unit's easy-open lid is designed with a security lock to prevent spilling, and its stay-cool frosted handle provides a secure grip. With its modern Scandinavian design and space-saving shape, the electric water kettle is an attractive unit to leave out for everyday use. The unit measures 8 by 3-3/4 by 7-3/4 inches.

cute and handy, but short-lived
I loved this little kettle--while it lasted. It was the perfect size for my daily morning cup of tea at the office, quickly and quietly boiling enough water for about two large mugfuls, then promptly shutting itself off. I'm also a big fan of Bodum's clean lines and jaunty colors. The one-piece design might annoy some users, because you have to unplug the entire kettle in order to rinse/fill it, but for me this seemed a fair tradeoff for enhanced portability. Lightweight plastic housing is another potential complaint, but again this can be an asset if you're looking for convenience above all else. The biggest drawback is the placement of the metal heating element: it comes into direct contact with the water. After a year of regular use, my kettle's heating element is covered in grim rust-colored spots which I'm not too eager to ingest. So I'm afraid it's time to upgrade to a sturdier, if less fun-looking, electric kettle. In all, a great device if you're willing to take convenience and cuteness (and frequent replacement!) over longevity.

Great Little Water Kettle
Excellent little appliance for the price. In an office with no coffee bar you have to either get water and heat it in the microwave or use someones coffee maker and heat the water. In my office the only good place to get water is a water fountain that is refrigerated water and it takes 3 - 4 minutes in the microwave to heat it. This little pot takes 27 ounces of chilled water and heats it to a boil in less time that the microwave takes to heat one small cup. It's sturdy construction and small foot print are great for my small cubical. The pour spout pours a concentrated stream without splashing. The lid locks on good, but removes easily. It is easy to clean. The only way it could be improved would be to have a warmer mode that keeps the water warm, but it reheats the water so quick that the potential safety concerns with having it on constantly are outweighed by the few seconds you would save by not having to reheat. All around I think it is well worth the price.

Bad connection to the base - electrical hazard
After about 3 months of operation the unit stopped working. I disassembled the base to find burned wiring and a burned contact element. Otherwise a great product.

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
This electric kettle heats up to 1.7 liters of water for coffee, tea, or instant soup without requiring the use of a stove. The round plastic base plugs into any standard outlet and gets water boiling in no time with its 1,500 watts of power. When water has boiled, a safety mechanism turns the unit off and prevents the kettle from boiling dry. For easy lifting and serving, the kettle rotates 360 degrees on the base and travels cord-free from counter to table for pouring. While the kettle's brushed stainless-steel exterior gets very hot during boiling, the plastic handle and knob on the removable lid safeguard against burns by staying cool. A drip-free spout keeps water from splashing and scalding and an anti-scale mesh filter traps lime and calcium particles (found in hard water) before they end up in a teacup. A clear water-level window conveniently shows how much water is left in the kettle. For long-term performance, the kettle's heating element is concealed, which keeps mineral deposits to a minimum and makes cleaning easier. Hamilton Beach warrants this product for two years from the date of purchase. --Cristina Vaamonde

Keep Looking, this one won't last.
I am surprised to see this model is still being sold. I bought this in Canada ealier this year, and it worked only a few months before the base switch stopped working. Because I was now in the states, its was a minor hassle to get a warranty replacement through Hamilton Beach, but one was obtained and cost me $8 in misc shipping costs. That one worked only a few months longer, then died the same way as its predecessor. Fool me twice, shame on me, huh? There seems to be a fundamental engineering flaw with the base switch on the model. Hamilton Beach should take it off the market and re-think the switch. I really wanted this kettle to work for me, loved everything else about it.

Terrible kettle
This kettle is no longer working after only 3 months of use. The auto-off takes far too long to switch off and the kettle leaks terribly. The kettle gets too hot. Stick to a good plastic electric kettle.

Good, but be careful ...
Be Careful Issue #1: the carafe is stainless steel. It has no insulation. It gets very, very hot.

Be Careful issue #2: the switch at the base of the carafe is vulnerable and flimsy-looking.

That's it. Everything else about this is terrific. The carafe is stainless steel inside and out, and the water level gauge uses a siphon so it's not in direct contact with the boiling water. And, even the lid is stainless steel. If you're concerned about plastic outgassing during heating, or just the plasticky taste, this is a great choice. Capacity is great too.

Now, as to Be Careful Issue #1, we had a smaller electric kettle with a plastic carafe. It got hot too! Maybe not as hot as this one, but it was certainly nothing we'd leave within reach of our kids. Furthermore, even if the outside of a hypothetical kettle carafe was cool to the touch, it would still be filled with boiling-hot water. So the heat issue is mostly a moot point. As to Be Careful Issue #2, the switch ... well, it may be a weak spot more from an industrial design standpoint than a practical one. We haven't snapped it off yet. But, we are pretty careful about being gentle when we press it down. Don't flick it around like a light switch and you'll probably be okay.

Product Reviews

Great small electric kettle
Pros:
Worked great in Sri Lanka at 220V. Excellent for making two cups of tea. Now Im using it on 110V. 600W is enough to boil 0.4L water in short time. My concern was not to load hotel rooms power outlet with too much wattage. Also all the shutOff features are working properly.

Cons:
Volume seems to be less. Could use at least more then half liter with same wattage. Price seems high for this little kettle.

Great travel kettle
This is a great little kettle for the international traveler. It is dual voltage, is very compact, and a small Bodum coffee press fits flush into the kettle. It heated 13 ox of water in less than 5 minutes on a recent trip to Bogota and its 7800 foot elevation. You will have to buy a blade type adapter, since this kettle has only a European round post plug. Great product!!

In a matter of minutes, hot water will be ready to use for anything from tea, hot cocoa, and instant coffee to instant soup or noodles. hot water
Kalorik Sunny Morning Hot Water Kettle--this is terrific for fast "boiling" water for any purpose. A real time-saving
device--handy, attractive and easy to operate. This shuts off automatically and boils very quickly. It can be used for many things when
you need just plain hot water. The kettle comes with accent of lime or
orange. As far as I am concerned, they can forget to include the two
tea mugs and placemats in the package -- they certainly are not necessary
to enjoy the kettle!!

GOOD VALUE GOOD QUALITY
Kalorik JK-25697L Sunny Morning 1500-Watt Cordless Jug Kettle with 2 Mugs and 2 Table Mats, Lime
VERY NICE LOOKING KETTLE, WORKS GOOD SO FAR. NO PLASTIC SMELL IN THE WATER. TABLE MATS AND MUGS ARE VERY NICE COLORS THEY REALLY MAKE EVERY MORNING LOOKS SUNNY. THE ONLY COMPLAIN IS THAT WHEN THERE IS NO WATER IN THE KETTLE THE SYSTEM IS VERY UNSTABLE, THE BASE IS VERY LITE, BUT WITH WATER INSIDE EVERYTHING IS STABLE AND GOOD, ESPECIALLY FOR SUCH A LOW PRICE.

Great pot, durable and doesn't leak
I've had this pot for 8 years, though it was made by GE back then. It managed to survive 4 years in the college dorms, and about 8 moves. Being borrowed by my boyfriend (now husband) and dropped, the plastic water level view is cracked, but that was 4 years ago and it still doesn't leak. We use it 4-5 times per week. I've never noticed metal coming off of it, though the bottom inside is scorched and doesn't look very pretty.

A poorly built Kettle
After trying 6 GE kettles and ended up with leaking kettles, we've decided to invest in the Hamilton Beach Kettle, the style of kettle is great but I have dicovered pieces of metal in my cup...over a few months the Kettle starts to burn from the inside and the material started to peel off. I would not recommend this kettle at all.

Electric Teakettle
Best buy I've ever made in a teakettle. No chance of accident with it. Shuts off when water has boiled. Will not go on if empty. Cord os not attached to the kettle and the heat element is not about to burn anyone if the kettle is off it. A gauge tells you how much water you have in it. I heat water for soups and other things prior to finishing them on the stove since it comes to a boil faster then I could do it on the stove. Great item.

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Shaped like a carafe, the Curl water kettle is sized to boil water for about 5 or 6 servings of instant coffee, tea, or soup. Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic, the kettle holds a maximum of 47 ounces (1.4 liters) and must be filled to a minimum of 15 fluid ounces (.45 liters)--just enough to cover the heating element--to operate. The cordless kettle locks into a small plastic electric base containing a thick-film heating element. The base takes up little counter space and allows the kettle to swivel in any direction for convenience. A floating red water level indicator on the outside of the Curl rises as water is added and shows how many cups of liquid it is holding. However, the indicator is often difficult to see within the Curl's four tiny bubble windows. A switch below the kettle's handle flips up and illuminates to show that the power is on. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes about 4 minutes to boil the full 47 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Curl automatically shuts off after boiling. For safety, the kettle has a hinged spill-proof lid that opens only by a push button and a frosted handle for a secure grip. A snap-in filter within the lid is easily removable for cleaning. --Cristina Vaamonde

looks nice, but has flaws
I got the red version of this (found it cheap) because i loved the design.

Basically you should only buy this for looks. Apart from two good features, it is mostly a flawed design (apart from looks-wise).

The good features are: a bit smaller than most electric kettles, which i personally like, and the fact that you can put it on the circular base at any angle, unlike some el. kettles which have to connect in a specific way.

It also has the auto-off feature, but all removable-from-base kettles have that anyway.

Other than that, it has the following problems (in order of annoyingness):
-you cannot see the level of the water inside--the bubbles are just a joke. this is more than just for safety--if there's only a little water inside it makes a sound like it's boiled the water, but it's really not hot at all!
-handle is uncomfortable to pick up (a basic design feature--i expected more from Bodum!)
-lid doesn't open enough, so it would be impossible to clean (luckily i've never bothered to de-scale my previous electric kettles), and it requires some precision to fill it up.
-button to open lid is kind of unecessary, and adds a step in filling it up.

I'll keep it, 'cos it was cheap and it looks cute, but you should probably pick another brand of electric kettle!

love this kettle
FAST FAST FAST. OK, sometimes the water level indicator is a bit tricky to read, but otherwise this is a GREAT kettle. Another reviewer mentioned leaks--there is a safety feature that dumps water out the back if the kettle is overfilled, and I suppose it's possible that valve could malfunction. I've been caught out a couple of times myself, so I wouldn't place this on your fanciest sideboard. I for one like the fact that the on-switch won't switch on when the kettle is empty. I also like the fact that the switch lights up when the kettle is on and that it cuts off automatically upon "boilage" with an audible click. Finally, I like the overall shape of the kettle and the handle. I'm short with small hands, so tall, bulky, or heavy kettles are hard for me to handle. This one is just right!

Look for anything else
I bought this for my wife for Christmas. The first one was dirty and looked used right out of the box. I emailed Amazon.com and they sent a replacement right away. When I got the replacement it looked as bad as the original.
My wife cleaned one up and is using it, but it has problems. The water level indicator is nearly impossible to read and the cover doesn't close or open correctly.
The best I can say is it works, but I couldn't recommend it unless you don't care what it looks like or how much water you're heating.

Good quality & safety features
I really like this product, especially for the affordable price. Here are the positives & negatives I've experienced ...

Pros:
1. Boils water FAST and it's quiet too. Perfect for the office.
2. Great safety features. You really want a cordless unit for easier/safer filling and pouring, and the auto-shutoff and on/off indicator light do work exactly as described. Also, the spout has a mesh shield and a plastic guard that prevent water from splashing out while boiling. Overall, no need to worry about accidents.
3. The plastic view-window with volume markings is on both sides of the unit, so you can see the water level from any angle.
4. Convenient storage: Relatively small footprint, and the cord wrap on the base, minimize counter clutter.

Cons:
1. It takes about 2 cups of water to cover the heating element, which can be less convenient if you just want a cup of tea.
2. The cord is only about 3 feet long. Fine for kitchen counters, but less so if you're using your office wall outlets/power strips.
3. The lid on mine sticks on one side, so I have to push to snap it into place (might just be mine though).

Overall I really like this kettle's quality & convenience. You can find pricier ones, but for the money, this one has all the necessary features and then some.

GREAT KITCHEN HELPER!
I absolutely love my toastess kettle. The water boils fast, there's an automatic shut-off, and being cordless, I can heat up water and then set it on the table for dinner. We use ours to help boil water faster for pasta, for soups, for tea, and for hot cocoa. I'm planning on getting one for my mother for Mother's Day because it has really taken the stress out of putting the tea water on in the morning and forgetting about it (we're both famous for this). I probably would have burned the house down by now with a regular kettle. This is definitely a keeper!

The Heating Element is NOT Concealed
Although one of the Product Features (as of today) says "Concealed stainless-steel heating element resists corrosion and scale build-up," it is not true. The heating element does look like stainless steel, but the whole thing is entirely visible when you open the lid and look inside the kettle. Also, although it is cordless, the electric contact between the base and the kettle is not located in the center of a round base but on the side of the oval base. I have to pay attention to the location of the contact before I dock the kettle back to the base.

From the Manufacturer
The Braun WK600 Impressions seven-cup electric kettle, made of brushed stainless steel, is extremely simple and convenient to operate. Both switches are within easy reach--switching "on/off" or to open the lid. There are also several important safety features. For added convenience, the kettle can easily be filled directly from the tap through the large spout. The integrated and removable filter holds back lime scale from being poured into your cup. A covered stainless-steel hotplate provides quick and even boiling, which makes this kettle great for boiling small amounts of water as well. Serving is easy with the open handle and drip-free pouring. This kettle is easy to clean, easy to operate, and measures only 9-2/3 by 7-5/6 by 12-7/8 inches.

Great product, highly recommended
I was a little surprised at the price but found that it is worth it. It is built very sturdy and does what it was made to. The stainless steel looks great and is very sleek. One thing though... GETS VERY HOT, but as long as you use the handle you will be fine. I really like that it came with a filter in it and has the automatic turn off when it reaches the appropriate temperature. If you're willing to pay $69+ for a water heater you will not be disappointed.

Braun makes an Impression
It really does. And it is a member of the new Impression line of appliances from Braun.

I have been using a Braun WK200 water kettle for years and I am quite pleased with it. It is made of quality plastic and made in Germany. I have no reason to think it won't last forever and I use it every day to boil water for green tea.

However, I spotted the WK600 in one of the stores and, after an internet search, found the same kettle for sale that put Amazon's price to shame, at little more than half of Amazon's price. (Sorry, Amazon.) Needless to say, I took advantage of the lower price.

The WK600 is a quality appliance and exceedingly well made, although it is made in China. It will be just at home in your kitchen as it would be on your dining room table.

Some features you will want to know about the WK600:

2200 watts
Capacity: 1.7L
Easy-read water level indicator (both sides)
On/off pilot light (both sides)
Easy water filling through spout
Concealed heating element
Four-way safety switch off incl. auto-off
Cord storage
Washable limestone scale filter
Easy to clean
Colours: stainless steel/black

Good kettle that is metal, not plastic
My main concern with the purchase of an electric kettle was that I did not want a plastic one, yet I wanted the convenience and speed of an electric kettle. The idea of boiling water in a plastic kettle scares me a bit-I don't want the chemicals leeching out into the water for me to drink. Granted, this kettle does have some plastic inside such as on the lid and in the water level indicator, but for the most part, it's all metal, which I feel safer with.

This kettle is not just handy for tea and instant coffee, but also for boiling water for pasta or any other cooking which requires hot water. It gets me there faster and more energy efficiently than boiling water on the stovetop.

It works as advertised, looks good and seems like it will last a long time. Note-you are not supposed to store water in the kettle indefinitely as this may cause it to leak. You are only supposed to use it and then after you have used it and are done for the day/night, empty it and store it dry. If you store it with water in it for a long period of time, it may leak. It's perfectly fine to store it with water, just know that it could leak a bit after a while. But even if it does leak, it's no big deal as it does not break or damage the unit.

It is true that the outside metal gets hot to the touch whereas a plastic model does not, but this is a minor inconvenience since the handle never actually gets hot.

In all I would recommend this kettle even though it's a bit more expensive than other electric kettles. I like that it is made out of metal rather than plastic.

Avoid this item
This kettle failed after four months of regular daily use. A replacement I got did not work at all.

One year and then rust
Actually 13 months. I picked up my kettle this morning and realized that there was corrosion where the plastic base meets the metal body on the outside. When I look inside I see discoloration to a greater or lesser extent all the way round the base - clearly this kettle is corroding from the inside out on a previously invisible seam. I had the previous version of this kettle and it lasted me several years before the base gave up the ghost but it never corroded in this way.

So good points: it does boil water fast.

Bad point (and the reason I won't be buying another one) - surely a kettle that is so poorly manufactured that water can seep through a seam and eventually leak is potentially a hazard? And there is no way to tell if "your" version of this kettle will be any better - you cannot see this seam inside until corrosion sets in.

Almost perfect
It does the job of boiling water efficently. The lid does not open fully and therefore it is difficult to fill. It is almost perfect. The true test is will it still work next year and the year after that. My experience with many different brands, cheap and pricey, is they last two years only.

Meets all my expectations (so far)
I had doubts about this kettle simply because I had no idea about this brand. Yet something attracted me in the first place and that's the capacity of this kettle: I had been looking for quite a big electric kettle for a while, but all I coukd find in real stores around were small kettles offered by famous brands like Braun.

I grew up in Europe and tea is my daily ritual. So I thought this kettle would be big enough for me since I hate to fill up a kettle with water after 1-2 cups. It is particularly convenient when you are having guests. All standart features: automatic shut-off, detachable base.

So far it's been doing a great job since I bought it in November.

Great Electric Kettle
Having drunk a lot of tea in Europe, I decided on getting an electric kettle while here in the U.S. I just received this Proctor Silex 1.7L kettle. I was a little skeptical because it is competing with the likes of Braun and T-Fal. But, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. It will boil 1.7L of water in about 8 minutes. I thought that was a little long, but I attribute it to the 110 volt system here versus the 220 volt system in Europe. Nevertheless, this kettle works great. The handle is ergonomic, the opening is big enough to clean and or remove the heating element, and it does boil water. I have only had it for a day, so I am not sure about durability. Nevertheless, it's a great electric kettle; a must for any serious tea drinkers!!!

Nice kettle
It's a nice product: light, quite good looking (if you're not into the chrome thing) nad efficinet. I had no problems with it so far. The only improvement to wish for is that it turns off when there's not enough water in it to cover the heating element - it turns off in a couple of minutes. Oh well, it's cheap enough.

With 1500 watts of power and a concealed heating element, this electric kettle quickly boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water, producing hot water for tea, hot chocolate, instant soup, and more--faster than a stove or microwave and using 50-percent less energy than with an electric stovetop. See at a glance how much water remains and when water's about to boil thanks to the unit's contemporary design that combines brushed stainless steel with heat-resistant glass. The kettle lifts off its 360-degree swivel power base for cordless pouring and can be set back down on the power base in any direction. For added convenience, it provides a comfortable soft-touch handle, a one-handed push-button lid opening for easy filling at the sink, an illuminated on/off switch, a clearly marked water gauge, and an adjustable-length power cord that stores in the base. Safety features include automatic shut-off once water reaches a full boil, dual boil-dry protection, and a cool-touch base and lid-lock. Convenient for left- or right-handed users, the electric kettle measures approximately 8-1/2 by 6 by 10-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

The max capacity is 1.75 litres, NOT 1 3/4 cup as stated
This electric tea kettle boils 1.75 litre of tap water in exactly 8 minutes, then automatically shuts itself off. It is saving us time and cooking fuel, and saves itself from boiling dry and self-destructing. I highly recommend it for those who need a couple pots of boiling water every day. So far(in a month or two), neither the heating plate in the bottom nor the glass pot itself have crusted up with mineral deposits and the water tastes pure and clean.

Godd but can be improved
I bought this kettle to replace a Capresso one, which I liked but it did not last long -- the handle broke off at the top just when garantee expired. I also hoped that this kettle will solve the problem of bad chemical smell apparently coming from the silicon or plastic seal between glass and metal heating element. Alas, this kettle has the same problem as Capresso! I hope smell will disappear as it did eventually in Capresso. Also, I was a bit disappointed that it took 7-8 min. to boil max. water -- longer than Capresso, I thought, but maybe I am forgetting. Another annoying feature -- the package said "fast and quiet," but it was neither. It was quite noisy, much noisier than Capresso. And don't even think to fill this kettle with more water than max -- even that was too much: the boiling water was splashing so violantly, I was afraid it would spill over, but luckily it did not. But the next time I'll use less water than max. With all this said, the kettle did its job, turned off reasonably fast, and pouring was easy -- you don't have to open the lid as in Capresso, and the steam did not come close to my hand. The kettle looks and feels very sturdy if not as elegant as Capresso. So, I hope it will last longer. But the next time I probably will go with a metal kettle, although some of them I saw in stores felt quite heavy even when empty, but at least they probably won't have stinky plastic. So, I would recommend this product, but with caveat, and not to somebody who is concern about plastic and bad smell.

They got some things right
I bought this to replace my Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle, Polished Chrome. I decided to try something new because this one had an idea on how to prevent mineral build up.

Well, while that turned out great, it had 2 problems:

1) IT SMELLS! The water has to pass through a plastic spout and it leaves the poured water with a horrible plastic smell

2) Too complicated for their own good. The lid has a button you push to open it. The capresso you have to (OH NO!!) lift it yourself. The difference: The mechanism for openning the lid on this one broke. I never had a problem with the capresso. And the replacement (I tried another one incase the problems I was having were just a fluke) had a small little filter screen for the water pop out and I couldn't get it back in (I could see this as useful for loose leaf tea).

I really liked no more mineral deposits, but I simply can't live with the smell.

Great kettle
This kettle is a great addition to my kitchen. It has a nice shiny polished appearance and performs well. It automatically shuts off after it begins boiling. I couldn't find this item in any stores in my local area. I am glad I searched around for this item online, instead of settling for something cheaper that was made of plastic.

Terrible water kettle
I owned this tea kettle for about 4 months. Here are some problems with the design:
1) Uses a plastic filter mesh just before the spout (inside the kettle). The filter mesh is removable; but the guides to hold the mesh is also plastic. So, definitely some plastic will leach into the hot water.

2) The tea kettle started to leak after about 3 months; after the water boils and you pour out a mug full - you leave the rest of the hot water in the kettle. It starts to leak from the bottom.

I do NOT recommend this tea kettle based on the leakiness alone.

cordless kettle
Cuisinart KUA-17 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Automatic Electric Kettle
This looks great in a traditionally designed kitchen, heats water up rapidly, and is a excellent in every way. The only problem we've had is that the klutzes I live with each put the first two I bought on the stove and turned on the burner, forgetting it is supposed to go on the electric base only. They melted the plastic bottoms of the teakettles and there is no way to buy just the kettle itself as a replacement part, so I had to buy a whole new kettle each time. What I've done now is placed it on a counter not near the stove to prevent such accidents as I love the product. Anyone need an extra base?

In addition, the 360-degree swivel base ensures comfort for both right- and left-handed users, and its cool-touch bottom wont mar surfaces. Just right for a cuppa
Having had two electric tea kettles break within a month, I went shopping for a new one. Of the three brands I looked at in the department store, including this one, all were manufactured in China. However, I haven't regretted my choice. It's a bit slow coming to the boil when full, and the button knob on the lid is rather small, but aside from those niggles, this is a nice unit. It has a brushed steel finish and is a bit on the heavy side even when empty, but I don't see that as a disadvantage as it can't be easily knocked over and it boils up quietly.

The power is supplied to the solid round base on which the kettle sits, so there's no cord attached to the kettle itself. The element is hidden in the base of the kettle, so there's no fussing with de-scalers and the inside of the kettle is easy to clean. A removable filter sits in the spout and the handle does not get hot. There's a see-through filler window on both sides of the unit, making it suitable for left- and right-handers.

All in all, good value for money.

Imparts an off taste to water
I found this same model, CK1500, at a local Target store for $36.95. The only difference was the color. The one I bought had an attractive red enamel finish rather than the brushed stainless shown in the illustrations on this site.

My experience using the product was similar to that of the reviewer who complained of an unpleasant smell during operation of the kettle. In addition, it should come as no surprise that water boiled in a kettle with a bad smell ends up tasting strange as well, and the taste of the water is imparted, in turn, to beverages made with it. The flavors of tea and instant cocoa I prepared with water boiled in the kettle were unacceptable, in my opinion.

My first reaction was to see whether the bad smell and taste might have come from the tap water I used when following the cleaning and preparation instructions enclosed with the product. After boiling several kettlefuls of filtered water, as opposed to water from the tap, I could still detect the unpleasant odor and taste. I will be returning this appliance for a refund if a week or two of daily use does not eliminate the problem. In the meantime, the fact that the item is manufactured in China leads me to worry that the bad taste and smell could be a sign that the product is contaminating the water with something that poses a risk to health. Only lab analysis of the boiled water would rule out such a possibility.

By comparison, my other criticism of the product seems minor. The included sediment filter that fits inside the pouring spout of the teakettle is defectively designed. The instructions for removing the filter for cleaning tell you to use your finger to push the filter into the interior of the pot, then retrieve it from there. But when you do this, the pressure required to dislodge the filter sooner or later tears the filter screen loose from its plastic housing, defeating the purpose of the filter (for me, the screen tore loose the first time I followed the instructions). By the way, leaving the filter in place effectively precludes filling the kettle through its spout, as the filter causes the water to back up and overflow when you make the attempt.

I believe this Black & Decker product has potential, but until its design is tweaked and it is manufactured in a way that eliminates the contamination of boiled water with a bad smell and taste, only customers with defective senses will find it satisfactory.

When I encounter a product like this, I always wonder whether any members of the corporate marketing team actually used it to see what their customers' experience would be. If capitalism is such a wonderful economic system, why does it seem to churn out defective products like this almost routinely? Of course, when we find ourselves mired, as we are now, in a nasty global recession that might devolve into something even worse, we have much greater grounds for challenging the leading economic ideology of our time.

Like the pot, but, it does have a funny smell.
I really like this pot. It does just what it is supposed to do. Heats water fast and shuts off when the water boils.

The only objection I have is to the smell the pot gives off as it boils.

A Perfect Little Pot
This little pot boils a large amount (2 litres) of water in just a couple of minutes. The cordless base makes it so much safer and easier to pour when it's ready, the twist open lid helps you to avoid dumping the whole pot on yourself and I like the auto shut off so there is no chance of boiling it dry or starting a fire. The only small criticism I have is that the twist open lid seems a bit cheezy - like it might not last as long as the rest of the pot does. I will update my review if that turns out to be the case. Also, you should be aware that the heating element is exposed in the bottom of the pot so don't get this one if you expect to boil anything other than water as you will coat the element with it. Otherwise this pot is exactly what I wanted/expected.

Perfect performance!
This was exactly what I was looking for. I'm not too fond of "no-name" appliances, but was willing to give it a go since the other reviews were much better than comparable name brand products which were significantly higher priced.

Works perfectly as described.

The large lid, though a little cheesy as others have said, makes filling very easy. Yeah, the element is exposed, so we'll all use our brains and not stick our hands in the pot (duh). This pot specifically says the coil is nickel, and not aluminum. I don't like to mess with aluminum cooking utensils, and am pleased.

The water-level window on the side is LARGE and easy to see. You can even watch the water boil.

The measure marks leave somewhat to be desired. They mark ".5 quarts, 1 quart, 1.5 quarts, 2 quarts." I would have preferred it mark off 2, 4, 6, and 8 cups instead. The marks are oval, so they don't really show exactly where "1.5 quarts" is. Also the max. and min. marks are sorta vague too. None of this is really a problem, but just a slight annoyance while I'm getting used to it.

The on/off switch is big and simple to use, the "on" light is big and easy to see, the handle is comfortable and easy to grip, the spout doesn't dribble, the pot slips easily onto its base, the auto cut-off turns it off almost immediately after the water reaches a full boil, the safety switch doesn't allow the pot to be turned on when the pot is dry (unlike our old Sunbeam), and value of being cordless cannot be overstated.

I followed the instructions to "season" the pot before using it (run a full pot of fresh water four times before the first use). The first run smelled strongly of plastic, but subsequent pots were odorless, and there is no lingering plastic smell or taste.

Five stars. What more can I say?

Good for the price
I've had this pot about 6 months and have been pleased with its performance so far. I'm ashamed to admit I probably only use it twice a week, but it's very convenient when I need it. It heats water very fast and stays quiet, and can really speed up boiling water for pasta or other dishes to be later cooked on the stove. The lid seems somewhat cheap, but for the price I can't really complain -- most lesser-capacity 1 3/4 quart pots are more than twice the price! Note that the item description is WRONG: this pot holds 2 liters or about 68 fluid ounces, not 55 as stated.

Product Reviews

It does its job well - there are things to note
I like this product and I use it nearly every day - it goes well with a french press, and heating water to 200 deg F is its primary function. At other times I used it to help a large pot of water (for cooking pasta) come to a boil much sooner.

Things to note:
- The brushed exterior is convenient, it doesn't pick up smudges like a polished one would

- The 2qt capacity is great when boiling water for a larger pot

- It's fast. It gets water to a boil very quickly, especially if you don't fill the whole pot - 1qt will boil really quickly, not just in half the time of 2qts

- The indicator window gets steamed and is barely of use. OK, I see how much to not fill it (Max line)

- The switch appears flimsy but there's not much to stress it

- A subtle red light indicates the switch is on. Initially I used to leave the switch on after pouring out the water, but now I know what to look for. At this point I don't regret that it could have been brighter, because it stays subtle in the kitchen. In a multi-user kitchen you might want to mention that the ON indication is very low-key.

- When boiling, the kettle takes a bit more delay than I'd expect to switch off and indicate the water's boiling (with a quiet click). By that time the sound of bubbling alerts me

- I haven't detected any weird smell, I did two boils with fresh water before using it

- The spout is definitely designed for slow pouring. It doesn't spill a drop. However, if you're trying to dump the water out really fast, like into a large pot, slow down or you'll get a trickle down the sides because the spout won't handle the volume

- There's a fine mesh filter across the spout to catch any scaling if it ever occurs (not seen it yet but I have an undersink filter) and I remove that to stick a thermometer to catch it short of boiling. Would have been nice to get something where I could simply set the temperature rather than monitor the kettle - but that would be a different product altogether.

- The lid is nice, opens gently

- I wondered whether I could heat vegetable stock in it, but I think that better be left to the 670 or 675 that you see on Good Eats - the electric hot pot that looks like a kettle but with perfectly vertical sides. This has a tube in it and its shape won't lend well to thorough cleaning. I'll stick to water.

- It feels like it sits loose on the base, but that's what makes it easy to pick up and put down. The base doesn't get lifted with the kettle, so it's nice in that. The cord is solid and has a three-pronged plug at the end.

All in all, it feels solid and can do what it's supposed to do. I fault it a star for trickling when I try to pour the water very quickly, and for the odd placing of the level indicator, the difficulty of being able to reach in and deep clean anything. I'd probably give it 4 1/2 stars if that was possible.

Excellent Product! Just Bought a Second One!
The first Chef's Choice we bought was the one with the black plastic top. Here's my review of that one which applies to this unit as well. I don't see any significant differences - we prefer the all stainless look but could live without it and the new "water gauge" on the side.

"Very slick look - I guess what you'd expect for this price. But, it delivers and we couldn't be happier. Fast to boil - even when filled to the max. I like the wide-mouth for pouring fast too. I use it for tea a few times a day but it's primarily for making coffee in the Freiling 1.5L coffee press. The wide-mouth makes the transfer fast. This is my first "cordless" hotshot and I don't think I can go back to the corded now - was always a hassle when pouring."

I'm impressed. It has all the makings of a product that will last at least a few years (3 months so far). And, if that holds true, I would definitely buy another.

Note: Still using this 6-10 times per day for tea and coffee and we both highly recommend.

Not good in the long haul
I've owned this product for about a year. I've used it every day. The 1st 3 months it worked well, though my husband had a hard time reading the water level indicator.

The 1st hint of trouble to come was that it would dribble a small amount of water from where the on/off switch is. Then it wouldn't turn off. The automatic shut off feature was one of the main reasons we bought it. The water would boil, the light would go out, then, the water would start boiling again....this would last until we turned it off manually. This was an intermittant problem, one, at 1st, I thought was our fault.

Today, we came home after being gone for 2 hours. The kettle had somehow been left in the on position. And apparently it boiled itself dry and then died! At best, it is unreliable, at worst, probably hazardous.

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
This attractive brushed stainless-steel electric kettle boils up to 1-3/4 quarts of water for tea, coffee, or instant oatmeal and soups. The 1,500-watt power base heats water quickly and, for safety, automatically shuts off when it reaches a boil. The cordless kettle conveniently lifts off the base to travel to the breakfast table, desk, or wherever tea is being served and has a cool bottom so it can rest on any surface. Unlike many other electric kettles, the heating element on this one is concealed within the jug. This design prevents calcium build-up, which can alter the flavor of hot water. The kettle also has a button that opens the lid with a single touch for easy refilling and an easy-to-read water level indicator. Other perks on this jug include a large, stay-cool handle and a wide lip for pouring. Cuisinart covers this cordless electric jug kettle under a 3-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde

Hazard
Being British and around electric kettles all my life this has to be one of the nicest looking but one of the worst designs. Having owned this kettle one week I have already accidentally hit the lid button whilst pouring boiling water into my cup. The on/off switch is in an ackward place, the on/off light indicator is difficult to see. This kettle is an accident waiting to happen.

Please consider something else
I read the reviews - in particular the comment about the thermostat - and decided I would have better luck - therefore I went ahead and purchased this kettle. For 3 months I was happy.. & then the problems began. Over the next 3 months the thermostat slowly stopped functioning. This kettle will boil off the entire contents without shutting off. Then the kettle developed a leak (location - at the water level indicator).

Defective product.
This is a defective product, from my experience, which is best to avoid. I purchased this unit at Bed Bath and Beyond. In less than two days the button which opens the top lid broke off.

I exchanged the unit for another Cuisinart CJK-17BC. On the second (replacement) unit, within 1 day of use the button which opens the top lid got stuck and would no longer open the lid.

2 out of 2 units defective--not a good track record.

In my opinion, the mechanism which opens the lid is poorly designed and prone to these problems.

I just replaced this unit with the Braun WK600 Impressions 7-Cup Electric Kettle. I am very happy with the Braun--has the same great look/features of the Cuisinart, but seems to have a much more reliable lid.

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Perfect for making coffee, tea, soup, and hot chocolate at home, in the office, or in the dorm room, this 1,500-watt pot brings 1-3/4 quarts of water to a boil more quickly than a stove or microwave oven. It lifts off its power base for cordless pouring. Made of 18/10 stainless steel with a matte-finish, black plastic lid, handle, and bottom, the handsome pot is polished to a mirror finish on the outside and has a brushed-finish interior that's seamless for easy cleaning. For safety the pot shuts off automatically when water reaches boiling or if it boils dry, and the hinged lid opens only when a button on the roomy, stay-cool handle is pressed. A gauge displays the water level and a light shows when the pot is operating. To prevent, say, tea bags from plopping out, the lid's indentation at the pouring spout contains sieve-holes. Measuring 6-1/4 inches in diameter and 8 inches high, the pot has a cord-wrap in the power base and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

Chef' choice cordless hotpot
I just recieved this kettle to replace a rival hotpot. The Rival lacked an on-off switch. It also gave off some strange tastes and some say stainless is better than plastic that way.

I reheat coffee and heat canned goods in the hotpot as it's easier for me than the range and the wide opening on this hotpot allows one to clean it easily though the lid won't lift as far as you'd like.

On recieving this kettle my first thought was the base was of light gauge plastic - seemed a little cheap. But I suppose that's ok if it turns out to be durable. Next I was amazed that the stainless vessel was of lighter gauge than I expected. This is probably all good though. Some reviewers of the other stainless kettles remark that they are heavy and get 'dangerously' hot. This one is actually reasonably light to maneuver. And if I boil 2 cups of water - turning it off myself which is before the automatic shut off - the stainless is just warm at the top; not really hot. If it doesn't wear out this is fine for my needs. Also - it looks like the picture. I give it one star for the appearance of the polished stainless, but that is subjective. Have to admit though, it cleans good.

Wonderful!
This is the best I have found. I tried the Cuisinart kettle but the solvents used on the plastic parts (including inside) gave the water a terrible taste and smell. Most kettles had those plastic parts inside for the auto-shut-off mechanism but not this one (it is concealed in the cover)
It is compact and does not take much room on your counter, very quick and so far nothing negative to say about it at all.

A super Pot
This has all the feature I wanted when I was looking for a electric pot to heat water for coffee. Its stainless steel so no plastic taste. Lid opens wide so its easy to fill and clean. No element inside the pot to interfere with cleaning the inside. It lifts off the base so that you can take it to the table. The large window shows the water level. This is our second one of this model. We had the first one for years until we broke it. The new one has a improved spout so that water pours out without spilling on the counter. I can't imagine someone buying any other model when this one has all the features you need for a heating water for coffee of tea..

Product Reviews

Good enough for my picky husband!
Before ordering this item, I spent half a day reading just about every single review of every electric kettle on Amazon.com. Why? Because my husband HATES change and will look for any excuse to decide he hates something I've bought.

This is the first electric water kettle I've ever bought, but we nearly burned down our house last month by accidentally leaving my beloved Chantal kettle boiling on the stove as we left the house for two hours. OOPS!

So I read every review and tried to anticipate his every concern. The Braun has a separate heating element, so you don't have to unplug the whole thing to tote the kettle to the faucet. The heating plate doesn't require you to position it "just so" to work. The lid opens fully for ease of filling. There is an on/off switch and the all-important "boil-dry" auto-off feature.

The first thing my husband did was check to see how easy it was to pour hot water from a full kettle without spilling or splashing ... it passed with flying colors! In fact, he hasn't been able to come up with a single complaint about this kettle.

I like the fact that it boils water much faster than a kettle on the stove, and that it turns off once the water reaches a full boil. I even over-filled the pot a bit the first time, but no boiling water splashed out.

If Mr. Picky likes it, you probably will, too!

Very well, and thoughtfully, made
This kettle is attractive and well thought out. The swivel base is handy for left and right-handed households. Also, the two-sided power light and water level indicators allow you to put the kettle in different positions on the counter. Bought this and returned a cheap West Bend model after 2 days.

love it, love it, love it!
I owned this in Amsterdam. I promised myself, when back in the States, to get the exact one. I've had the US version for almost 2 years and I can't imagine not having one.
It is just as easy for left handed as for right handed people.
Easy to fill, clean and pour.
Boils in a snap!

Product Reviews

Amazon.com Review
With its modern Scandinavian design, this large-capacity water kettle is attractive enough to pour water for tea in a conference room full of executives. And, with its affordable price, this kettle works equally well boiling water to dish up bulk ramen noodles for a group of college students.

Made of heavyweight polypropelene plastic, the Ibis holds a maximum of 57-1/2 fluid ounces of water (about 13 cups). It must be filled to a minimum of 8-1/2 fluid ounces--just enough to cover the heating element--to operate. A floating red water-level indicator on the outside of the Ibis rises as water is added and shows how many cups of liquid it is holding. The detachable kettle locks onto the base unit for heating and can then be removed for pouring or refilling. Also made of polypropelene, the base encases the stainless-steel heating element. The short 22-inch power cord stores beneath the base so the unit can be easily transported.

Flipping up the switch below the kettle's handle turns on the power and illuminates the indicator light on the kettle's top. The heating process is rapid and quiet: it takes only 4-1/2 minutes to boil 35 ounces of water and the sound is almost imperceptible. For safety purposes, the Ibis automatically shuts off after boiling and has a hinged safety lid to prevent boiling water from spilling and a frosted handle for a secure grip. --Cristina Vaamonde

These things work well, but not for long
I've got a box full of these that have been returned to our store because they burn out. The problem seems to come when the kettle is used multiple times without a cool down period. The switch internals melt down leaving you with a dead pot.

Flimsy product from usually reliable Bodum
Looking at water kettles and reading reviews I decided to ignore the cheapest (which seemed to be plastic-y and not long lasting) and go for a Bodum, as I have used their products in the past. I know $40 is still inexpensive for a water kettle in the US (I dont know why) but I expected more bang for my buck. The Bodum kettle is made of cheap plastic that actually is bendable when heated. The smell in the kettle is of burnt plastic and while it works very well (boils water fast/shuts off/has nice design) I cannot bring myself to drink water from this kettle - would you boil water in a plastic take-away container? That is what it seems like to me. I never expected such cheap quality possible in electric kettles since I have lived in Ireland where every household has one and there are never any as flimsy as this Bodum kettle.

Worked great while it lasted...
We've had this Bodum Ibis cordless water kettle for at least 2 years now, and have always been happy with it's performance until now.

Occasionally it wouldn't sit down on the base exactly, and recently it started shutting off before it was done boiling (though the switch didn't shut off, so I think it was a loose connection). But the worst was the other day when the plastic on the base where the prongs connect from the kettle just started to melt. I don't know how it happened, but it is now no longer usable due to the acrid stench of melting plastic when it is in use.

While this kettle worked, we loved it. I may look at other brands before replacing this one, but most likely I'll end up with another Bodum Ibis because it really did work great for those two years.
